DAAA Chapter 2: On the Matter of Chaos and Order

Updated: Oct 6

To introduce the concept of magic, I must first begin with a tale.

Long ago, before the world we know existed, only a pair of souls inhabited the empty expanse. One of the beings, who we will call Chaoro, was full of energy and creativity. He was always seeking to impress the other, Oria, with his creations. He created the world, plants, creatures, the elements, and nearly everything else you see. Oria was never impressed with his creations. She was a very serious, powerful, and wise entity. For all the creations that Chaoro made, she commanded the rules to which they must exist. Fire must only be hot, creatures must die, and time must flow continuously. All must have rules and purpose for as long as she existed. Again, Oria was never impressed with his creations. She thought he was obnoxious and reckless with his power. She decided that her purpose was to bring order to the universe.

This continued for eons and as Chaoro grew frustrated and bitter, so did his creations. With every bit of madness that he accrued, his creations grew more powerful and more sinister. It was when the Chaos demons were spawned that Oria finally decided that this madness must end. She ruled one final law for the universe, so she thought; The gods may no longer interfere directly with the universe, as their influence is much too strong. Chaoro was furious. He devised a retaliation that could never be reversed or restricted. He channeled all of his power and destroyed himself, scattering the essence of Chaos across the universe.

This Chaos is uncontrollable. It is an invisible power that mutates and has no goal. For good or for evil, it entirely randomly infuses the world with mutating energy. New creatures spawned, calamity occurred, but, most importantly, the power of creation was bestowed upon the mortals. This is how magic came to be. The powers of creation come in many different forms, but the one that I subscribe to is wizardry. The pursuit of knowledge about the world and the forces of chaos. Our power grows with our understanding of the universe, and so we dedicate our lives to studying it.

In order to counteract the forces of Chaos, Oria commanded a dogma, and any mortal who follows it will be granted the power of Order, through her. This began The Order, a following dedicated to worshiping Oria and combating the forces of Chaos. Clerics and paladins train within temples and churches, honing their beliefs, their bodies, and their will. I will likely go into more detail about the powers of Order in a later chapter.

With these energies in constant interplay, the world is always in movement. They are battling, working together, and mixing in many different ways all the time. Some types of magic even use a combination of Chaos and Order. It is important to understand the origin of magic and how dangerous it can be. Magic is neither good nor bad, as both sides make use of it. It is necessary to protect oneself and to make our daily lives more interesting and productive, but it is also the same power that kills families, destroys worlds, and fuels terrible cosmic horrors. It is something to be respected and understood. That is what the pursuit of wizardry is all about. Understanding magic so that we may make use of it and not be controlled by it.

This spell is a protective ward using both the forces of Chaos and powers of Order. It creates a shield that protects against Chaos. Any creatures and powers that make use of Chaos will be resisted, blocked, or even entirely deflected, depending on your mastery of the spell.

Ward of Two Souls (Simple Iteration)

Abjuration

Focus (Optional): An item of emotional importance to the caster.

Procedure: This is the simple version of the spell. It is significantly easier and quicker to cast than the complex version. It uses more of the spontaneous and malleable nature of Chaos while the complex version uses more of the determined and faith-based power of Order, including a much longer incantation. To cast this spell you must form your mana into a shape, typically a disk, semi-sphere, or full sphere. Then you must speak the incantation. As with all incantations that channel Order, the power of your spell will depend on your belief in them and/or your connection to Oria. In this case, your belief will chain your mana into a solid shield, keeping your chaotic energies within, and other chaotic energies out. The stronger the belief, the stronger the shield.

Incantation: “By the power of the Judge, the Protector, Oria, may no Chaos bring harm!”
